Footmax
The next step to Innovation
The Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center has
recently added a computerized system for fabricating
prescription orthotics, Footmax. Orthotics are customized
insoles worn in any type of shoe and they correct the way a
patient walks. If a patient is walking incorrectly, their entire
body can be out of alignment causing all types of problems
including foot, ankle, leg, hip, and lower back pain.
The traditional method of fabricating orthotics
required the physician to take a plaster or foam mold of the
patients foot while not placing any weight on the foot
(static). The traditional method can be very time
consuming, inaccurate, and messy. The Footmax system
allows the clinician to fabricate thinner, lighter, accurate,
measurements while the patient is weightbearing (dynamic).
A five-minute gait and pressure analysis will produce a scan
that is accurate and specific to each patient's biomechanical
abnormality. The scan is sent via modem and acts as a
guide to manufacture custom orthotics. Once approved, they
are sent back to the clinician and can be picked up at the
earliest convenience. The whole process can take up to two
weeks.
Orthotics are covered by most insurance plans
because insurance companies know the value of orthotic therapy
in the prevention and treatment of many conditions that can lend
to short-term or even long-term disability claims
