How do I get to the Hospitals?
When do I show up for my surgery?
If you have the first surgery slot, 7:00 am, we asked that you check in to registration one and half hours before your time of surgery. Otherwise we asked that you check in 3 hours before your time of surgery. This will allow ample time for any medical evaluation and laboratory work that needs to be done. This will also allow you to be available if there is a last minute cancellation in front of you. Occasionally surgeries take longer than planned and we ask for your patience in such situations.
Will I need a medical evaluation prior to surgery?
Depending on your preexisting medical condition (such as hearth disease, kidney disease, diabetes, etc.) we may ask one of our medical experts to evaluate you prior to the time of surgery in order to assure the safest conditions for your surgery. This may be done several days to weeks before surgery. If you health is in relatively good condition and/or your surgery cannot be delayed then our medical experts will evaluate you the day of surgery upon your arrival. Occasionally, surgeries may be canceled at the last minute if further testing is desired either by the medical team or the anesthesia team.
What kind of anesthesia will I get?
Many different options exist for anesthesia when having the foot or ankle surgery. This is usually discussed by you and the anesthesia team the day of surgery. They will recommend the safest and most reasonable option. The options include local with or without sedation, regional (making the whole leg numb) with or without sedation, spinal, or general. Although a limited number foot and ankle procedures may be performed under local anesthesia, the majority of our surgeries will require other forms of anesthesia listed above.
Will I need crutches after surgery?
Weight bearing instructions will be given to you after surgery by the discharge team. Crutches will be provided to you by the discharge team and the therapist with appropriate instructions.
What should I do with my forms that need to be filled out?
Absolutely no paperwork will be handled on the day of surgery. Forms can be filled out at our office either prior to surgery or upon your first follow up appointment. Please note that there is a $10 charge for each form and kindly allow 7 to 10 business days for completion of forms. We must receive payment prior to processing these forms.
What should I expect after surgery?
Pain is normal after surgery. If you had your leg numbed with anesthesia you may have little to no pain when you leave the hospital, but be aware that the anesthesia is temporary. Several hours after surgery the anesthetic will wear off and normal post operative pain will set in. It is important that you not wait for the anesthetic to wear off prior to taking any pain medication.
In general, you will be supplied with several prescriptions after surgery. These may include a narcotic medication for control of pain (i.e. Percocet or Vicoden), a special anti-inflammatory medication to control inflammation (Celebrex), and an antibiotic to prevent infection (Keflex or Cleocin). Depending on individual needs and restrictions these medications may vary.
When should I get concerned after surgery?
Your surgeon or emergency services should be notified with the following symptoms after surgery:
- Severe fevers and chills
- Uncontrollable bleeding from your incision
- Inability to urinate for more than 8 hours
- Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood
- Toes turning white or losing their circulation
- Sudden loss of feeling in your foot or toes
- Severe onset of pain that cannot be controlled by the pain medication
